Sprinkler Zone Not Turning On — Diagnostics
Free step-by-step guide to diagnosing a sprinkler zone that will not turn on — electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic triage; field-wire continuity, solenoid resistance, manual bleed test, controller output voltage, diaphragm inspection, and shared-zone comparative test.

A zone that does not turn on can fail at the controller, field wire, solenoid, valve diaphragm, or water supply. The display alone does not prove that voltage or water reached the valve.
Symptoms to compare
- The controller counts down normally but no heads rise or spray.
- The station shows a short, open-circuit, or skipped-zone warning.
- Manual valve operation produces water while the controller does not.
Free diagnostic checks
- Run the zone manually and compare it with a known-working station.
- Trace the common and station-wire path and inspect waterproof splices.
- Check master valve, upstream shutoff, flow-control, and valve-box condition.
What the result usually means
- Controller or field-wire faults prevent activation.
- A solenoid or diaphragm fault prevents a signaled valve from opening.
- A closed master valve or flow-control blocks water despite a signal.
Free diagnosis boundary. Use low-voltage diagnostics, turn the controller off before opening a splice, and isolate water before opening a valve. Use the matching Repair Guide for the protected repair procedure, parts list, testing, and verification.
