What a Backflow Test Actually Checks

An annual backflow preventer test exists to verify that irrigation water cannot siphon or back-pressure into the potable supply. Three assemblies do that work, and each fails differently: an RPZ (Reduced Pressure Zone) holds two independent check valves plus a relief valve that vents any pressure differential; a PVB (Pressure Vacuum Breaker) uses a spring-loaded check plus an air-inlet relief; a DCVA (Double Check Valve Assembly) uses two spring-loaded checks with no relief. RPZ and PVB assemblies fail loudly (they drip or spit when they break); DCVAs fail silently because they have no relief port — a silent failure is the most dangerous, which is why annual testing exists.

The 5 Specific Failure Points on an Annual Test Report

#1 check insufficient differential — line-side check leaks downstream, indicating fouled seat, weak spring, or debris
#2 check insufficient differential — body-side check leaks back; relief valve will drip continuously when this is the failure
Relief valve opening point out of tolerance — RPZ relief opens either above or below the specified differential threshold
Pressure differential across the assembly — static vs. dynamic drop indicates internal bypass
Shutoffs not holding — inlet or outlet ball/gate valves pass water when closed, contaminating the test reading

Leaking RPZ — Symptom Walk-Through

Three drip modes tell you which internal part failed. (1) Continuous drip from the relief port while the system is pressurized — the #2 check is leaking backward fast enough to trigger the relief. (2) Drip only when a zone activates — pressure drop on the outlet side uncovers a marginal #1 check seat. (3) Drip on system startup, then stops — air pocket in the relief chamber reaches steady state; a one-time drip after winterization is normal, a recurring drip every morning is not.

Stuck Check Valve — Debris, Spring Fatigue, and Scale

A check valve can fail open (allowing backflow) or fail closed (blocking forward flow and starving the zone). Localize by: shut the upstream ball valve and watch the outlet pressure gauge — if pressure holds for 30 seconds, the #1 check is sealing; if it bleeds down to zero in under 5 seconds, the #1 check is fouled or the spring is fatigued. Repeat with the downstream ball closed for the #2 check. Mineral scale and sand on the seat are far more common than spring breakage; soak the assembly in white vinegar for 10 minutes before declaring the spring dead.

Cracked Bonnet — Visual and Dye-Test Diagnostic

Bonnet cracks are usually invisible until they leak under pressure. With the system pressurized and the zone off, swab each bonnet-to-body joint with a dye pen (leak-detection dye, not food coloring — the dye pen won't bleed into adjoining surfaces). A streak of dye drawn into a crack means the bonnet is compromised. Pressure spikes from water hammer are the usual cause — if you find a cracked bonnet, also check for a functioning water-hammer arrestor upstream; without one, the rebuilt bonnet will crack again within a season.

Frozen-Damage — Winterization Gaps

Freeze failure shows in three patterns: (1) Hairline cracks in cast-iron bodies along the bonnet flange — these cannot be rebuilt, only replaced; (2) Ruptured freeze plug on PVB bodies — the small brass disc on top of the valve was designed to break before the body cracks, and a ruptured plug means freeze reached the body before the plug was able to give; (3) Split relief-valve diaphragm on RPZs — the rubber diaphragm tears when water inside freezes and expands. Inspect all three locations with the system depressurized and the valve body empty.

Operational Differential-Pressure Test Steps

Close both inlet and outlet ball valves. Bleed pressure from the test cock between them.
Connect the high-side hose of the differential gauge to test cock #2 (between the two checks). Connect the low-side hose to test cock #3 (downstream of #2 check).
Open test cock #2 then #3 slowly. Read the differential — a healthy #2 check holds 1.0–5.0 psi differential.
Close test cock #3 then #2. Move the high-side hose to test cock #1 (upstream of #1 check) and low-side to test cock #2. Read the differential — a healthy #1 check holds 5.0+ psi differential.
For RPZ only: bleed the relief test cock to atmosphere and slowly open it — the relief opening point should fall within the manufacturer's spec (typically 2.0–6.0 psi above the #2 check differential).
Record all three readings. Any value outside spec means a documented failure mode and a rebuild is required.

Repair vs. Replace Decision Criteria

Rebuild if: the device is under 10 years old, has no body cracks, and passes a differential test after cleaning the seats
Replace if: the body shows any crack, corrosion has pitted the seats beyond cleaning, the unit has failed annual testing in two of the last three years, or the bonnet replacement costs more than 60% of a new assembly
Always replace: any unit with a frozen-body crack, a ruptured freeze plug (PVB), or a permanently distorted bonnet flange
