How a Sprinkler Valve Activates

An irrigation valve opens in two coordinated stages. The controller sends 24 VAC through the field wires to the solenoid mounted on the valve bonnet. The solenoid coil lifts a small plunger, bleeding pressure from the top of the diaphragm chamber. With that pressure gone, line pressure lifts the diaphragm and water flows out the outlet. The valve fails to turn on when any single stage in that chain — wiring, solenoid, bleed port, diaphragm, or supply pressure — is broken.

Common Symptoms

One specific zone never starts on the programmed schedule
Multiple zones on the same controller output stay off simultaneously
Solenoid clicks or buzzes but the valve stays closed
Manual bleed screw produces full flow, automatic operation remains dead
Controller reports the zone as running but no water reaches the heads

Diagnostic Steps

Confirm supply pressure at the valve. Static pressure below 20 PSI is often enough to keep a marginal valve from opening even when electrical signals are correct.
Run the manual bleed on the valve bonnet — turn the bleed screw or solenoid 1/4-turn counter-clockwise. If water flows freely, the diaphragm and valve body are good; skip straight to the electrical path.
Measure solenoid resistance with the zone off and the two solenoid leads disconnected. A healthy 24 VAC irrigation solenoid reads 20–60 Ω. Open-circuit (OL) means a broken coil; near-zero resistance means a shorted coil — either way the solenoid has failed.
Measure controller output voltage while manually activating the zone. Place one probe on the active zone terminal and the other on COM. You should see 24–28 VAC. A reading below 5 VAC points to a wire break; absent voltage points to a failed controller output or its fuse.
Check the solenoid bleed port by unscrewing the solenoid (counter-clockwise 3/4-turn) and looking for a small hole at its base. Debris in this port prevents pressure bleed-down even with a good coil, so the valve will not open.
Check field-wire continuity from the controller end to the solenoid leads. Total loop resistance above 40 Ω for residential wire runs indicates a corroded splice or broken conductor somewhere in the run.
Inspect the diaphragm with the bonnet screws removed. Look for tears, hardening, or debris beneath the diaphragm preventing it from sealing or lifting correctly.

Root-Cause Summary

Failed solenoid coil — most common; replace the solenoid (universal 24 VAC solenoids fit most brands).
Shorted solenoid tripping the fuse — replace solenoid and the controller fuse.
Clogged solenoid bleed port — clear with a fine wire; do not enlarge the port.
Broken or corroded field wire / splice — splice with gel-filled direct-burial connectors.
Failed controller zone output — repair or replace the controller or output module.
Torn or hardened diaphragm — install a matched diaphragm kit.
Low static supply pressure — verify upstream valves and pressure regulator.

When to Repair vs. Replace the Whole Valve

A failed solenoid, clogged bleed port, and torn diaphragm are all single-component repairs on a still-functional valve body. Replace the entire valve if the body is cracked, the bonnet threads are stripped, more than one internal component has failed at once, or the valve is more than 15 years old and parts are no longer stocked. Patching an aging valve rarely lasts a full season.
