How a Sprinkler Valve Opens

An irrigation valve opens through a two-stage process: the controller sends 24 VAC to the solenoid, which lifts a plunger and bleeds pressure from the top of the diaphragm chamber; line pressure then lifts the diaphragm and water flows. Failure at any stage — wiring, solenoid, diaphragm, or incoming pressure — produces a stuck-closed valve.

Common Symptoms

Zone never activates; no water at heads
Solenoid buzzes or clicks but valve stays closed
Manual bleed screw opens the valve but automatic operation fails
All zones on one controller output fail simultaneously

Diagnostic Steps

Manually bleed the valve: turn the bleed screw or solenoid 1/4-turn counter-clockwise. If water flows, the valve body and diaphragm are good — the fault is electrical.
Measure solenoid resistance: disconnect the two field wires and read across the solenoid terminals with a multimeter. A healthy solenoid reads 20–60 Ω. An open circuit (OL) means a failed solenoid; a reading near 0 Ω means a shorted solenoid.
Check controller output voltage: with the zone active, measure VAC between the zone terminal and common at the controller. You should see 24–28 VAC. If absent, the controller or its output module has failed.
Check field wiring continuity: with the controller off, measure resistance from each wire at the controller end to the solenoid wires at the valve. Values above 40 Ω total loop resistance indicate a wire break or poor splice.
Inspect the solenoid port: remove the solenoid (3/4-turn counter-clockwise) and check that the small bleed port at its base is clear. A clogged port prevents pressure relief and holds the diaphragm closed even when the solenoid fires.
Inspect the diaphragm: remove the valve bonnet and lift out the diaphragm. Look for cracks, tears, or debris lodged in the metering hole. A damaged diaphragm cannot seal or lift correctly.
Verify inlet pressure: with the zone off, use a pressure gauge at the nearest head to confirm static pressure is 20–80 PSI. Below 15 PSI the valve may not develop enough differential to open.
